A look to the past.

The whole history began in 1977, when Mr. Robert Opron was chosen to be the head of design team for the new project called "L42". First drawings of the prototype appeared a couple of months later, being in fact a draft of the Renault 9.

Four years later...

... The Renault 9 and Renault 11 appeared respectively in 1981 and 1982. They were in production until 1989. The beginning of the 1980's was a time of big downfall for Renault - French national car manufacturer. The introduction of phase 1 R9 (4-door sedan) and R11 (3 and 5-door hatch-back) was the Renault's response to growing demands of the C-class cars market worldwide.

R9/R11 immediately became a success with their modern desgin, sophisticated electronics and good-performance, durable engines.

At the beginning R9/R11 were offered with C1E, C1J, F2N and F8M engines. The phase 2 (Model Year 1987) appeared with C1G, C2J, F2N, F8M and the MY88 with C1G, C3J, F3N and F8Q - see technical specs. section for details.

The trims offered were TC/TL/TD/TS/TX/GTC/GTL/GTD/GTS/GTX/GTE/TCE/TLE(R9 only)/TDE/TSE/TSE Electronic/TXE/TXE Electronic/Turbo/Automatic. Additionally some special variations of R9/11 were offered, like: Broadway, Spring, Spring 2, Cheverny, 90 GT, Zender. With such a wide variety of engines (from 48 to 115PS) and interior equipment trims the R9/11 were an accurate choice for everyday urban traffic (TL/GTL), long range comfortable travels (GTX/TSE/TXE) and for the racing purposes, as well (Turbo/GTE).

1989 was the last year of French R9/R11. Their successors - R19 and R19 Chamade appeared respectively in 1989 and 1990.

The Renault 11 used to be (up to 1996) and Renault 9 still is produced in Turkey, by OYAK-RENAULT Factories in the city of Bursa. Models offered:

R9 Spring (1400ccm/62PS, from 1994 1400ccm/68PS), R9 GTL (1400ccm/68PS), R9 GTE Broadway (1400ccm/72PS), R9 GTD (1595ccm/55PS), R9 Fairway (1600 ccm/80PS), R11 GTE Broadway (1400ccm/72PS), R11 Rainbow (1600ccm/80PS), R11 TXE Flash (1721ccm/92PS).

Some R11's are also produced by Renault Argentina, where the 1600ccm engine was invented.
