Here are (most of) the modifications I've done to the interior last summer:
FACIA: Painted black instead of
the original bring-the-sickbags beige. A product called 'VHT
Vinyl Paint' did the job, gives a nice matt satin finish that's
quite durable ('soaks' into the material). Glovebox lid and
illumination were not standard on the TC.
INSTRUMENT PANEL: From a 9 GTS, made
by Jaeger (original TC is Veglia). Features a rev counter, trip
meter and oil level gauge. The speedo reads to 220 km/h instead
of the TC's 180 km/h. An illumination rheostat has also been
fitted.
CENTRE CONSOLE: Also painted black.
The oil pressure gauge comes from a 9 GTS, the digital clock from
a 9 GTD. A special 3-function fogs switch: off / front and rear
on / front on only.
STEERING WHEEL: From a 9 GTS
DOORS: All trim here is from a 9 GTL.
The GTL has plastic trim panels below the windows, TCs were
plain painted metal.
PILLARS: Plastic trim from a 9 GTL, painted black. The TC had no
trim on the centre pillar. Front kick panels from an R11, they
feature a place for a speaker.
ROOF: The original dirty, sagging roof lining has been replaced
with a fresh, natural white one. Brings some light to the
otherwise dark (but sporty!) interior.
PARCEL SHELF: Charcoal lining fitted instead of the original
beige.
SEATS: From a 9 Broadway,
adjustable backrests front.
The 'strategic' technical data:
CAR: 1983 Renault 9 TC, technical
code L421.
ENGINE: a reconditioned 1397 cc C1J (aka
847), 60 bhp. Electronic integrated Renix ignition. Solex 32 BIS
carburettor. This engine version was used in the early (pre-1986)
R9&11 TL/GTL/TLE versions.
GEARBOX: 5-speed JB1 from an R19
BRAKES: original TC with small master and rear wheel cylinders,
small servo, no pressure regulating valve for the rear wheels.
SUSPENSION: Lowered. Turbo -40 mm
aftermarket front coils, adjusted TC rear torsion bars. Sachs gas-pressure
shock absorbers
PLANNED MODS FOR NEXT SUMMER:
Tidying up of the engine compartment (includes a respray).
Fitting of C2J-68 (68 bhp) spec
camshaft, carburettor, manifolds and ignition ECU. Brakes upgrading to early Turbo specs (vented
discs front, drums rear, bigger servo and brake cylinders)
PLANNED MODS FOR DISTANT FUTURE...: :-) 4-bar rear suspension. 1.4 Turbo or F7R 16V engine...
HIGHLY UNLIKELY MODS: Modern ICE (although that could easily triple the car's value) ;-) Security (now who'd want to have an old 9 anyway!?) Front splitters (where the heck would a fit them!?) :-) Air freshener or fuzzy dices Single wiper conversion (perhaps I've passed that age...)
